Other Indications
Anemia
Anemia is a condition which develops when the body has too few red blood cells (RBCs) to supply oxygen to tissues. There are many underlying causes, including blood loss, faulty blood cell production, and destruction of red blood cells.
Anemia is the most common blood disorder in the US, and affects about 3.5 million Americans. Severe anemia, resulting in tissue hypoxia, can affect vital organs and lead to heart attack.
Erythropoietin (EPO) is a commonly used treatment for anemia and has a worldwide market of more than $14 billion. However, erythropoietin has recently received a “black box” warning from the Food and Drugs Administration on its label due to increased risk of venous thrombosis and possibly reduced survival in some patient populations when used at high doses. EPO has indirectly addressed this issue by increasing RBC mass; OXY111A can do the same without affecting RBC mass and, therefore, eliminate serious side effects of EPO.
OXY111A can improve oxygen delivery without increasing red blood cell mass.

*Serious side effects associated with EPO include: venous thromboembolism; mycardial infarction; stroke; and the presence of EPO receptors on some cancer cells.
Increased, regulated delivery of oxygen by OXY111A to tissues should alleviate the symptoms of anemia. NormOxys has an active research program to explore this important indication.
Other disease states that are characterized by a state of hypoxia include:
- Stroke
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- Macular Degeneration
- Obesity
