Therapeutic Applications
A state of oxygen pressure that is lower than normal is called hypoxia. Hypoxic tissues occur in a variety of disease states or disorders, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, late Alzheimer’s, and anemia, to name a few important ones.
While the binding of OXY111A to hemoglobin (Hb) reduces the affinity of Hb for oxygen, it does not affect the normal regulation of the delivery of oxygen. Therefore, there is no risk of over-oxygenating healthy tissues upon administration of OXY111A. Oxygen will only be delivered to tissues that are in a hypoxic state and therefore demand additional oxygen.
